School Community Council Minutes
September 19, 2023
Present: Shane Jones, Connie Rawlins, Toni Gibbons, Jessica Higginbotham, Sheri Egbert, Melanie Chambers, John Louviere, Teri Rhodes, Kathy Christiansen, Kathy Bullen
I. We were welcome by John and the time turned over to Shane.
The first item of business was to nominate a new Chairman. Sheri nominated John to remain the Chairman. It was seconded by Jessica. All were in favor.
Nominations were then open for Vice Chair. Sheri nominated Jessica Higginbotham. Melanie seconded the motion. All were in favor
Shane review the Council membership and asked if we knew of any other parents that would be willing to serve. John nominated Don Darrington. He will contact him and ask if he would. (John later reported that Don was willing to serve on the council and his name has been added to the Council membership). This is Connie Rawlins last year.
II. Shane reminded everyone about the School Community Council training to be held on Tuesday, October 3, from 6:00-7:00pm.
It is a Zoom link so it can be watched at a different time if needed. The link will be emailed out to the council.
III. Elevator Speech:
One thing that we have changed this year is our Wednesday early morning meeting with teams. We are trying to get our PLCs working better. It is hard for teachers to meet after school is hard with extracurricular activities. So, we are trying to protect that Wednesday morning team time. We won’t be holding faculty or department meetings. Once a month we are having mini faculty meeting on teachers preps. It’s a smaller meeting with better discussion and gives some more one on one time. Some teachers liked it, some have expressed a few concerns about it but we will do this year and see how it will work. Brady is running the instructional leadership group of teachers.
The District Administration asked the SV Admin if they had their elevator speech ready - what their vision for SV is. The Assistants didn’t quite know for sure. They asked the teachers if they have an elevator speech ready about their classes? Shane shared his elevator speech with the committee. He said it is RCK. It is building relationships with kids, continually getting better. To believe in teaching the whole kid. If students can learn but don’t know how to be a parent, spouse, employee, be happy, etc. then we have work to do. We are in the kid business. Working on relationships we have with each other, co -workers. He is a big believer in ‘0-8- too late’. We are putting a lot of energy into our freshmen and new teachers. We are trying to create a culture, where everyone chooses to respect everyone in the school.
Sheri mentioned that she definitely feels a different vibe at the school with this new administration. It was echoed by the rest of the committee and they expressed their appreciation.
IV. Shane reviewed the Trustland and TSSA Plans. Sky View received 221K this year. It ends up being more with the carryover from last year.
Goal #1: We are focusing on the Student Success Center and addressing mental health using 9th grade success team Stu Howell and Janae Sorensen. We’ve hired 2 Math tutors, using 1 ½ FTE’s for class size reduction and paying for an RCK academy coordinator. We have added 18 extra classes. 1st tri classes are biggest, but will be smaller 2nd and 3rd tri. We are working to help students to be self-advocating – students need to step up and talk to teachers. It also includes Summer trainings for RCK Academy, Habitudes and money for supplies.
Goal #2 focuses on ELL learners. We were put on probation by state last year. (Targeted School Intervention) They looked at test scores, college readiness - 7 different scores. There isn’t a good model for a program. We have made some major changes. We have an ELL coordinator, Anna Barkle that works great with the students. She has recruited best teachers to help. Marty Reeder, Blake Heaton, Vanessa Hall, Kim Nield, Kandyce Barber and Mason Cardon with LIA. We just hired an ELL aide and a Parent Liaison.
TSSA- Goal 1: We installed vape detectors in bathrooms. Jessica asked if they are in locker rooms. They are not. There has been at least one student caught a day. The parents get called. If they get caught twice, they have to complete an educational class. On the 3rd offense, they get a truancy ticket. There are consequences but are not punitive.
TSSA Goal #2: Goal is to raise test scores. It is also to lower class sizes, and offer more AP classes. This is the first year we have offered it to freshmen. We are still doing the Canvas ACT course possibly starting in December and a summer in-service.
TSSA Goal #3: We are implementing an Instructional Leadership Team
$300,000
V. RCK Academy Newsletter
We are emailing an RCK Academy Newsletter out to Freshmen parents to let them know what they are doing in class to help reinforce at home.
VI. Kathy Christiansen said that there are 30 quilts donated by the Cache
Valley Quilting Guilds to give to the schools for kids that are struggling. She gave Sky View 2 of the quilts to give out to two of our students. There are 90 students in the district that are homeless.
Jessica said that she is on the bond committee and has a brochure if anyone is interested.
Shane shared a video of him speaking Spanish for ELL parent night using AI. (He doesn’t speak Spanish!)
Next meeting, Wednesday, October 11th, 6:45am (with Faculty Meeting)

November 2023 Agenda & Minutes
School Community Council Minutes
November 21, 2023
Present: Shane Jones, Brady Fonnesbeck, Amanie Crosbie, Janine Justis, Connie Rawlins, Toni Gibbons, Stefani Thatcher, Jessica Higginbotham, Sheri Egbert, Melanie Chambers, John Louviere, Teri Rhodes, Kathy Christiansen, Kathy Bullen
We were welcomed by John Louviere. A motion was made by Toni to approve the Minutes from the September meeting. It was seconded by Connie. All were in approval.
- Aspire test results and ACT Prep: Brady reviewed the data from the Aspire and ACT test from the last two years. There was a jump in the Aspire testing in the Language Arts from 49% to 61% and from 44% to 50% in Math. The ACT scores jumped from 65% to 74% Teri Rhodes asked if that was indicative of the teaching from North Cache? We will be doing the ACT Prep class again with the Juniors this year that will start in December. Teri asked if very many opt out of either the Aspire or ACT. Janine said it feels like a lot, but more do on the Aspire than the ACT. We have a 95.3% participation rate. We are looking at how to schedule students taking the Aspire. We will send information out the parents about the test and let them know that tis a predictive ACT test. Connie said that all of the Math 3 students have signed upon Schmoop – and ACT test prep site. Data shows those that finished the course increased their scores on the ACT. The average composite scores on the ACT for the past 3 years have consistently risen (19.1%, 20.4% 21.1%) We had a 4 point jump in English over 3 years. The English department has been working hard in their PLC’s to help the students.
Brady talked about the ILT team that we have implemented this year – a collective teacher advocacy group. If we work together, it is better on kids than separately.
The Team meetings (PLC’s) groups will change each trimester depending on what is being taught. They are making goals and working on team dynamics. Connie said it has been good for keeping teachers focused.
- Cat Canvas/Student Survey: The Exec Council has started a Cat Canvas page that has information for the school on. We had the students login in to their Canvas page to become familiar with it and to vote on the School Constitution and a Student Survey about school climate, well being etc. Information about that survey was emailed to the parents. The Survey is done by Panorama, a data managing tool.
- Rules of Order and Procedure Approval: This is need to be approved by the council every year. A copy of the Rules of Order and Procedure was distributed. John motioned to approve and Stephanie seconded the motion. All were in approval. Jessica mentioned that we can add anything to that if we wanted to.
- Other: Shane said that Sky View is up for Accreditation next year. It will be operations as usual, but the council may be asked to help with some things.
Shane will be presenting information about Sky View to the School Board on December 6th. This is just an accountability piece for the District.
Jessica asked if anyone had seen the production of “It’s a Wonderful Life” that Ridgeline did or read the editorial in the newspaper about it? The editorial was critical for how women were portrayed in the play. A few comments were made about the Musical “Nice Work” that Sky View was doing and was questioned whether the production met Sky View Standards as well as cheerleaders dances & clothing etc or anything that the school does.
Teri made the comment that the schools have become a cultural battleground.
Meeting was adjourned until the next meeting, Wednesday, December 19th
December 2023 Agenda & Minutes
School Community Council Minutes
December 19, 2023
Present: Sheri, John, Don, Teri, Kathy, Melanie, Connie, Tom, Brady, Shane, Kathy
We were welcomed by John. He asked for approval of last month's meeting minutes. Sheri motioned to approve them and Melanie seconded the motion. All were in favor.
Shane said he has met with the person in charge of accreditation because we will be going through accreditation again next year. The School Community Council will probably be involved like they have been in the past. Kathy said that she and Teri helped last time as well and would be willing to help with anything needed again.
We’re still adding pieces to our data package. We just got the results back from the Panorama survey given to the students earlier. It has given some good information broken down by groups. One question was about the student’s belief in their selves in academics and it was surprisingly low. It is most likely because of fear of failure and inadequacy. The 9th graders scored the highest on that question. Kathy wondered if social media has made a difference with that. John said he is doing research and is finding that there is a big disconnect. Melanie said she is teaching a Strategies for Academic success at the University. It is going to be a concurrent class, so that might be a good one for students to take. The most likely reason that 9th graders have a higher percentage is because they start high school out feeling good then get into everything then start having doubts, but hopefully comes back up by the time they are seniors.
Shane said we’ll share the full report when we get it.
Teri mentioned that sometimes the oldest children or parents who weren’t successful in school are probably the ones that struggle the most with self-efficacy, because they don’t know what they don’t know.
The Gear Up and College Access advisors are great assets for our students here. Their names are Ellie Christensen and Landon Lloyd. We will have them come to our next meeting. Our ACT prep program is helpful too.
The statistics show that 50% of students go to college and 50% of those don’t finish.
Teri said the really good thing about it is that the program tells them if their interests and skills don’t match. Tom said it will be nice to pull up a one-page summary for each student. We can add all of the Sky View courses to it so it can suggest classes to take that matches their aptitudes.
Kathy Christiansen said that she has been meeting with leadership at BTECH. Their scholarship applications are due Feb 28th. We didn’t have very many of our students get scholarships from them in the past. Shane said we don’t have as many students take BTECH because our schools have grown but BTECH hasn’t. It isn’t because of lack of interest. There are not enough spaces and a lot of the classes fill up quickly. Kathy said she would pass the information on. Teri asked about the new nursing facility- if we will be able to send more students?
Tom said that our biggest issue is their registration. They open registration August 1st and we don’t even give students their schedules by then and by the time they try to register that classes are full. Teri said that they should base the enrollment on the % of students at the school. Counselors meet with them every year and have talked about it with them for the past two years but still hasn’t been any changes.
We will have a Freshmen Parent Welcome Night in February. There is a little glitch working with NC and their scheduling. They register students for classes before we meet with students and parents. Then they don’t have enough information to decide what courses they want to take. That is something that we need to work out with them.
Teri said the Legislature requires so much more than they used to for everyone- teachers, counselors, administration and school boards. She and Kathy expressed their appreciation to the counselors and admin for everything they do.
Don Darrington, a new member of the council, was introduced. He has a sophomore here at Sky View, two that have graduated, and an 8th grader.
Shane said that we appreciate all the parents on the council. We want everyone to know that they are welcome to ask questions about anything.
Sheri suggested a debriefing with the students who were present when we had a medical incident with one of our students. Shane and Tom said that they will follow through with those students.
Teacher of the Year: Shane announced that Vanessa Hall was chosen as Teacher of the Year for Sky View. He said that she does very well in the classroom, is always figuring out technology and how to get better. She is dedicated and spends a lot of time with student leadership, homecoming, and working on the new Sky View branding. She bleeds SV blue. He expressed thanks to the school board for letting us celebrate our teachers.
School District Report: Shane presented a 20-minute report about Sky View to the School Board. Teri mentioned that she especially liked that he included the data package. It is good having all the schools in the district report to all the board members so they can see what is going on in the schools.
PCCR and Registration Information: Tom reported that we are getting geared up for next year already. We will be starting our PCCR and Registration meetings on January 23rd to go over career and educational goals and select classes for next year. We’ll be having class meetings to get out information to students and parents. The Counselors meet with all Juniors and Seniors. Our parent participation at these meetings is high -over 80%. We will be doing a Course fair during RCK hour on the 16th and 17th of January. Teachers will be able to share information about the courses they offer. John asked about what the success is of doing the PCCR’s. Tom replied that it is a great opportunity to sit down with each student and parents to talk about them and their goals and help them make a plan to meet their goals. They also look over testing results and give them ideas to help them improve.
Report on YouScience: Tom talked about a new program that was just brought on this year. It is called YouScience and is an interest testing for students. Teri said that Cache High uses it, and it is fun- it uses brain games. The students accounts go with them after they graduate. Tom said that before we just used interest inventories and this is more based on aptitudes. During the freshmen year in the RCK academy courses, we have every freshman go through it. Once they have an account they can get on it anytime. It is also used in Career Workshops so they are exposed to it.
The meeting was adjourned until our next meeting on Tuesday, January 16th
January 2024 Agenda & Minutes
School Community Council Minutes
January 16, 2024
Present: John Louviere, Toni Gibbons, Don Darrington, Kathy Bullen, Brady Fonnesbeck, , Amanie Crosbie, Ellie Christensen, Mason Cardon, Shane Jones, Ryan Grunig, Connie Rawlins , Janine Justis, Jessica Higginbotham
We were welcomed by John. Toni motioned to approve the minutes from last month. Don seconded the motion, all were in favor.
Course Fair/PCCRS
Shane talked about how we are gearing up for next year. We will be starting our PCCR’s next week. Class meetings will be held today and tomorrow for the Sophomores and Juniors. A Course Fair will be held in the Commons during RCK hour today and tomorrow as well. Teachers will be able to share information about their courses with the students.
Freshmen/Welcome Night
We will be having a Freshmen/Parent Welcome Night on February 5th at 6:00pm. This is where we talk to 8th grade parents and students about high school, talk about getting involved, and about our RCK Academy class with mentors. The Student survey that we previously did, the 9th graders scored higher than any other grade on the social and emotional section.
Toni said that USU has a flyer about how it is never too early to prepare to go to college and asked if they could bring some to share that night?
Shane said he has talked to the counselors about students that don’t enroll in Seminary and opt out of full schedules. Why do they not stay here and take BTECH or Concurrent? Instead they are choosing nothing. We have AP and concurrent available now for Freshmen and sophomores.
Teachers will be in Commons area that night to showcase their programs. It should only last about and hour and 15 minutes.
Recent Hires
Shane reported that we have 3 student teachers that are currently employed with us- Sarah Harmon has finished her student teaching, Carter Hansen is working on his in English, and Kade Ogden is in science. We had a teacher leave mid-year, so Erica Howes was hired to teach math. We also have quite a few student teachers this trimester.
We have interviewed and will be announcing a new football coach tomorrow. We just hired a track coach - Ryan Egbert, who is a former SV and track student. We are rounding up assistant coaches to help him. We will be hiring a boy’s tennis coach soon.
Utah College/Career Advisor and Gear UP
Ellie Christensen is our College and Career Advisor. It is through the Utah College Advising Core – a program that works kind of like a grant, but it isn’t a grant. It is based at the U of U. She is one of 60 that work in the schools.
The objective of the program is to help students have somewhere to go to talk specifically about college. Ellie works mainly with seniors and helps them apply for college. It is a very similar job to Amanda, our Career Center Coordinator. Amanda does more with Careers, but they work together.
Gear Up is a grant program. They are not sure it will be funded next year, so this may be the last year. Landon Lloyd is our Gear Up Advisor. Gear Up is focused on the low-income students. They have to qualify to be a part of the program. They work with them helping them to get to college. A lot of them are first generation college students.
Don asked how do you get the students to apply? Shane said our Advisor is strategically placed in the same room as Ellie and as our food pantry They also put up at table at parent teacher conferences and will have on the Freshmen parent night. There is also a Gear Up Advisor at the Middle Schools so they are familiar with it when they come to Sky View.
Ellie also speaks Spanish so she works well with the Hispanic students.
Kathy asked about how we are handling the refugee students. Shane said we really haven’t had very many.
We have had major changes in our ESL program. It is now a team program headed by Anna Barkle. We hope we are ready if/when we get some refugee students.
We will be doing an ELL training with the teachers on the February 16th Professional Development Day.
CTE Summary Sheet
Brady shared a spreadsheet that shows the District CTE testing percentages for Sky View and compared to other schools in the District. Every year each CTE class has a state test at the end of the course. A score of 80% or better passes as certified. Brady says it’s a perfect opportunity to create a scoreboard. It is also tied to funding. Funding for CTE program is based on how many receive their certificate and pass the skills assessment too. SV is the highest percentage of students passing in the District. Brady said teachers should focus on what is needed to pass the state test to meet the 80%. A lot of the CTE classes are concurrent enrollment as well. The teachers have curriculum they need to follow. Shane said the CTE model is a great one to follow.
Other:
A reminder that we will be going through Accreditation again and the Community council will have a big role. It is always a little bit different each time so we aren’t quite sure what will be needed?
Jessica Higginbotham asked about the student suicide that happened right after the Christmas break. They have a son that has struggled with suicidal ideation and they hadn’t heard anything – so they weren’t sure how to talk to their son.
Shane explained that we have a district response team that will come to the school and talk with students. It happened first thing right back from break. We sent a letter to parents with the appropriate amount of information. The parents asked to not share that it was suicide, then on Thursday they said we could share that information. It was shared with students. But w we probably should have shared with parents as well, so they could have had conversations with students afterward. We had to make decisions quickly. We definitely learned some things.
Jessica also said that her daughter was at a boys wrestling match. One of Exec students was leading the students in booing the opponents when their name was read.
John mentioned that USU is a bad role model. Kathy said it is also a parent issue and gave an example of parents at a hockey game. She thought that Cache Valley teams and parents are the worse.
Toni said she thought the first line of response should be through the coaches. Brady said there is a night and day difference from two years ago because we have been addressing it with the students. We just need to let the students know what the expectations are.
Meeting adjourned. Next meeting – Tuesday, February 20th
February 2024 Agenda & Minutes
School Community Council
February 13, 2024
Minutes
Present: Ryan Grunig, Toni Gibbons, Don Darrington, John Louviere, Connie Rawlins, Janine Justis, Summer Gunn, Jessica Higginbotham, Sarah Nelson Hallock, Sheri Egbert, Brady Fonnesbeck, Shane Jones, Kathy Christiansen, Kathy Bullen
We were welcomed by John. Toni motioned to approve the minutes from last month. Janine seconded the motion. All were in favor.
Friday Professional Development/ELL training.
Shane talked about the Inservice planned for Friday’s Professional Development day. One of our goal is to work with the ELL population and possibly will be seeing more refugees coming to Sky View. We will start the Inservice with the movie “The Good Lie” which is about African refugees that come to US and the challenges they face. We want to tell a story and to understand what these students bring to a classroom. We had a fight on a bus last Friday between a Hispanic girl and an ELL student. Knowing their history changed how we dealt with the students. This is the purpose of the movie. We will have a follow up discussion and training on ELL students afterwards.
Jessica asked how would teachers know if there is any history of anything with students. Shane said there are certain flags on PowerSchool, but not for mental health or any trauma. Communication is the key. All of our ELL students are in a program with Anna Barkle.
Kathy Christiansen mentioned that the Center for Refugees in Logan is now in charge of all of them in the state of Utah. This could possibly mean we might be getting more refugees in the valley.
Shane said that any of the committee members are welcome to join for the Inservice on Friday.
Toni expressed appreciation to Shane and leadership for their direction on these items.
Trustland Final Report
Shane reminded everyone that when this Administration came on, they made changes in an amendment to the Trustland Plan for that year. Some of the changes were funding the Student Success Center, lower class sizes in core classes, offer more AP classes. Also included was Software for the Habitudes course for RCK Academy. We also put some money into personnel for math tutors and a parent liaison.
Goal #1 was to increase the graduation pass rate. Shane shared some statistics that showed that 9th graders were more on track than 10th and 11th. The number of students getting F’s has decreased so we are headed in right direction. Attendance has improved as well. We need to zero in on certain kids with problem attendance.
Goals #2 & 3 focus on the ASPIRE and ACT test scores. Students with a composite score of 18 or less are not college ready. This is one goal we won’t make this year. 50% of the students complete the ACT prep class. Only 41% last year were engaged.
Brady said that the first year they assigned students by alphabet, but this year they assigned groups by GPA. This way teachers could spend more time with the engaged students.
On our Aspire testing scores, some areas dropped a little but we are still above state average.
Next month we’ll show exact numbers on report.
Final Report from last year submitted this week.
We will be submitting the final report on last year’s plan and then we will start the plan for next year.
On our current school plan, Goal #1 is increasing our graduation rate focusing on 9th graders. 95% are on track by sophomore year.
We have hired a teacher and have offered team taught classes in SpEd, and ELL
We have also hired an RCK academy coordinator (Joy Gonzales) and will have some summer training for RCK teachers. We are still using our Student Success Center with Stu Howell.
Our goals will be similar for next year but there will be one change for next year. The Social Workers grant is done, so more money will come from Trustland next year. We are committed to have a social worker on staff. Having Janae at the school is invaluable.
Goal #2 is the same as the past, focusing on ELL and SpEd. We have put a lot into this year but need to see results for this year before we do a plan for next year.
Summer asked if the co-taught classes are available for all grade levels? Connie replied that is for 9th ,10th and 11th for Math and 9th for English. We need extra help in non-core classes. Connie said that new teachers coming in are trained better so that is good.
Shane said that Sky View is being audited this year on our Trustland Plan and he has a questionnaire that he needs to fill out that will be done this week.
Next year’s plan will be on the next meeting agenda
The meeting was adjourned until March 19th.
March 2024 Agenda & Minutes
School Community Council Minutes
March 19, 2024
Present: Janine Justis, Teri Rhodes, Kathy Christiansen, Don Darrington, Amanie Crosbie, Brady Fonnesbeck, Shane Jones, Sheri Egbert, Jessica Higginbotham, John Louviere, Melanie Daines, Connie Rawlins, Mason Cardon, Stephanie Thatcher, Kathy Bullen
We were welcomed by John and he called for a motion to approve the minutes from last month. Janine motioned to approve, Sheri seconded the motion. All were in favor. (A wording error was previously noted and corrected)
John asked if there is anything they can help with for graduation. Shane reported that it will be at USU this year again. The Senior class officers want to make it more student led so they have been in on the planning for the program. They would like to do the yard signs again, but funding them is in question. We started doing them during COVID- it was a great way to make connections. The last couple years we have had some funding and money donated to help. The cost is around $3300. It’s hard to ask for money since we already have people donate for booster club, etc. Shane asked the committee what their opinions were about it and asked them to check with other parents. Sheri said that her opinion was that some kids could use the recognition. The PTA was asked to help but they couldn’t and suggested to them to maybe ask businesses for support.
Teri asked that we make sure the students know that for graduation, the school board still has to accept the graduates.
Communities that Care
Shane talked about this new organization that is headed through a grant, or something through Bear River Mental Health. The purpose is to help coordinate help with the mental health crisis. Shane said he will be on staff and wanted to invite anyone who would like to help as well.
Shane is President of the UASSP (Utah Association of Secondary School Principals) and the consensus from their meetings is that we need help in the following ways. 1. Teacher shortages and retention
2. Mental Health
3. Funding – especially Special Ed. The Federal government was supposed to fund at 40% and right now it is at 13%. It has been 20%. Shane went back to Washington with the group and talked to state legislators. There are lot of people making decisions that have no education background.
Teri asked if the congressmen were receptive. Shane said they listened and were gracious, but they told them a lot of issues are state issues.
Resiliency Month
Since it is Resiliency Month, Shane wanted to talk about some of the things that we are doing to help build resiliency. We will email some videos and articles out that are good. One of the things we do in the RCK Academy class is use the Habitudes for learning life skills. One of the sections is about Tollbooths or Roadblocks. When hard things come up do we go around or go through and pay the price? Resiliency is a big topic everywhere. With our LIA students, the world view is limited. When they were talking about role models and heroes, the role models are close to home. Other classes could be different. There are many different opportunities in high school to practice resilience. We had Tia Stokes here for an assembly at all the high schools in the District. She has a great life story about resilience. We know what issues the students face, what things we are having discussions about.
John said he has a staff at USU that he shares things with that we talk about here. They are impressed with what is going on in our community and how intentional we are and expressed appreciation for what we are doing.
Shane mentioned that we’ve implemented a 90% attendance requirement for athletes for the term before their season as well.
Stephanie said her experience in high school was very different and it means a lot to see relationships built here for her students.
Trustland Plan 24-25
The Trustland Plan is pretty much staying the same, the same goals as last year. There will be some minor changes. It is not finalized yet because we are still missing a bunch of data. The timing for this needs to be better.
The Vape detectors will be coming off the TSSA plan. We have already purchased them and have them placed in the bathrooms. The students don’t know we have them. It sends an alert on phone and emails to the Administration. The 1st time they are caught we just record it. The 2nd time a student gets caught they get a warning. The 3rd time they will do cessation training at school. The 4th time they will receive charges from Deputy Carley. The parents are contacted on every offense. It happens a lot, we could spend all day dealing with it. We are good for 5 years on the Vape detectors.
The major goals are on the ELL program. Next week Shane and Anna and other teachers from the District are meeting with Wasatch High Schools in Park City for the 1st ELL Summit. There isn’t a model program for ELL that exists so no one is sure what to do 100%. The big plus for Park City schools is accessibility to concurrent and higher end courses. Shane will report what they talked about at the next meeting.
Shane has a meeting about accreditation this week, and that could change some things on the plan as well. We need to have a finalized plan by end of this month when it is due to the district and the school board will approve in April.
Our other goal is raising test scores. We just finished the State ACT test and will be doing the Make Up test next Tuesday.
We will be announcing the Valedictorian, Salutatorian and Top Scholar. We have a great senior class, they are a great group of students. We have 38 seniors with 4.0 GPA’s.
Council Membership/Elections
The Trustland guidelines have tightened up some, so we need to make sure we are following them. So, we need to decide what size we want the council.
Toni, Summer, Jessica and Sheri’s terms are ending this year. John, Stephanie, Melanie and Don’s end next year. They are 2-year terms.
It is required that High Schools have 10 at a minimum of members. Jessica proposed to have 8 parent positions. John seconded the motion and all were in favor. We will send out email to parents to see if we can get any one that would be interested. If we get more than 4 that are interested we will have an election.
We also need to look at our posted Rules of Order and Procedure to see if they need to be changed.
Meeting was adjourned. Next Meeting: April 16th, 6:45am
April 2024 Agenda & Minutes
School Community Council Minutes
April 16, 2024
Present: Jessica Higginbotham, Ton Gibbons John Louviere, Kathy C., Don Darrington, Shane Jones, Blake Tubbs, Sheri Egbert, Amanie Crosbie, Melanie Daines, Ryan Grunig, Stephanie Thatcher, Connie Rawlins, Kathy Bullen
We were welcomed by John. Sheri motioned to approve the Minutes from the last meeting. John seconded the motion. All were in favor.
John asked if we need help with anything for graduation. Amanie said that the graduation committee has everything planned and organized.
- Trustland and TSSA Plans
Shane has shared the direction the school is going. There has a been a big push to simplify the process of the Trustland Plans and approvals. Our plan has been approved by Kathy Christiansen and passed with flying colors. The state has provided a rubric for them to use which has made it easier.
We have flip flopped the Trustland and TSSA plans because they better meet our goals.
Part of our TSSA Plan is to improve our test scores. The number of students in our AP classes and testing has gone up. Stephanie mentioned that she has encouraged her students to do concurrent more instead of AP. Shane said we need to push the rigor up and that is better done with the AP classes. Jessica said sometimes the student’s schedules restricts taking some classes. Shane talked about Park City High School and the number of students in AP classes. John said it is like comparing apples and oranges. Toni mentioned that Ridgeline has more students taking concurrent than any other in the district. AP classes are suggested for out of state college bound students. Shane continued saying that our regular classes should have rigor. Students need to work harder and be here. We need a different mindset. We need to have both AP and Concurrent. If students take AP, students are more academically prepared for college. Kathy C. said concurrent does save time and money.
Shane said we don’t want either at the expense of either, but options for both. Toni said if students plan well, with concurrent and AP, they can have a General Ed certificate by the time they graduate.
Shane’s goal is just to raise the rigor in the student’s classes.
Our Trustland Plan includes the following:
- Raising the scores on ASPIRE test.
- Increase our ACT Composite score
- Increasing scores on ACT for post readiness (18+)
- Increase number of students in AP and concurrent
Shane talked about how Park City school district students do summer classes to help prepare for academic rigor. Sheri said that Brevin did summer classes, but they were the elective type classes. Our district typically has done just credit recovery in the summer. Shane believes that our students need to start sooner, so we have concurrent and AP classes now available for Freshmen. Kathy Christiansen said her daughter works as an advisor at Weber state and they meet with all of the high school students. They are funded by grants. Stephanie said that it would help the students to have an advisor to help them plan out. This mentality needs to be accessible to every student. Blake said the counseling dept has done a better job helping students with post high planning, not always necessarily college though. He also addressed Sheri’s concern about counseling help for summer courses. They are working within the district to do own summer courses having teachers at the school doing the classes. Toni said USU will be doing some online summer concurrent classes.
Instructional Leadership teams and PLCs are a big component of the Trustland Plan. We also use the funds to pay a Data manager, some FTE’s and a summer college prep course with Christa Bell
The TSSA plan will be more like our Trustland Plan was last year.
We don’t have official scores out yet for the ASPIRE test but two years ago our ACT was 19.1- our lowest. We have increased scores for 3 years in a row and was up to 21.6. The English test scores have jumped the highest.
- Safety/Earthquake Drill
We are having an Earthquake Drill today doing 1-minute Drop, Cover Hold on. Won’t evacuate because we had a fire alarm and evacuated already.
We are updating our School Emergency Response Plan.
Kathy asked how we do a reunification plan at a high school level and how we address the students that drive? Blake displayed the plan showing the gathering area in the Spectator gym. The students driving is something that we need to work on. Some decisions might need to be made at the moment depending on the emergency. We will also will use church across church if needed.
- End of Year Schedule
Amanie said that the Senior Signs were ordered and have been delivered here. We will divide and conquer to distribute to students. The big question no is how to pay for them? Not everyone has same opinion on whether they are needed. We will pay a little from Bold and Blue and the Senior Class account and see what is needed from there. We have talked about having parents purchase at the beginning of the year. And have options for those who would like but couldn’t pay.
John said parents he talked to said they didn’t care either way. If parents purchase, then split parents could buy 2, or would be easier to deal with any other issues. That would be a good transition, to do it by market demand. Jessica thought that it should be all or nothing. Because there are parents that care or don’t care. We will plan on addressing the issue early in the year next year.
The schedule for the last week of school. The week before is senior week and testing week.
- Openings on Council/Elections
Shane said that we will have elections in the fall, and will give us summer to recruit to replace the members that are leaving this year.
We won’t plan on meeting in May. We have been spending a lot of time on hiring for next year. We have hired a new drill coach and girl’s soccer coach and will be hiring a new Math, English and Science teachers. We have 27 applicants for English, 18 for math, and 14 for science.
John thanked Admin for their work on the Trustland plan.
Meeting was adjourned until September.
